research. It has long promoted excellence in research activities
through its Framework Programmes for funding in research.
UK higher education institutions have a history of successful
participation in the Framework Programmes.
The EU seeks to promote researcher mobility through its Marie Cure
Actions. They are instruments to encourage participants to
develop their research skills and broaden their career prospects by
carrying out their research in a country other than their own.
The Bologna Process has recently
extended beyond its focus on two cycles of higher education -
Bachelor's and Master's - to include the doctoral
level as the third cycle. The aim is to promote
links between the European Higher Education Area and the European
Research Area.
The UK Research Office in Brussels is the authority
on research matters relating to the UK.
