EU Policy - Research

The European Union has extensive involvement in the field of research. It has long promoted excellence in research activities through its Framework Programmes for funding in research. UK higher education institutions have a history of successful participation in the Framework Programmes.

The EU seeks to promote researcher mobility through its Marie Cure Actions. They are instruments to encourage participants to develop their research skills and broaden their career prospects by carrying out their research in a country other than their own.

The Bologna Process has recently extended beyond its focus on two cycles of higher education - Bachelor's and Master's - to include the doctoral level as the third cycle. The aim is to promote links between the European Higher Education Area and the European Research Area.

The UK Research Office in Brussels is the authority on research matters relating to the UK.
